It’s that time of year again. We’re talking about the time to schedule your young athletes’ sports physicals for the upcoming season. A sports physical isn’t the only exam your child needs this summer–it’s also the best time of year to schedule their annual wellness checkup. But, if your child is getting a physical, does she really need a wellness check, too?
The short answer is yes! There are some similarities between sports physicals and an annual exam. However, the key differences between the two are essential to your child’s overall health. Sports physicals mostly examine the athlete’s physical appearance, like their height, weight, reflexes, and their muscles and joints. Other physical tests like a routine vision test may be performed as well. Providers will also listen to their heart and lungs to look for signs of asthma or a heart condition such as a heart murmur.
Wellness checkups include the same physical exam as sports physicals. In addition, they also include lab tests, urine samples, and immunization boosters if needed. Your child’s provider will also ask questions about your child’s behaviors both at home and school to check for signs of issues such as ADHD symptoms or signs of anxiety or depression. Use this time to address any concerns you the parent have for your child.
Can I schedule a sports physical and wellness exam at the same appointment?
We recommend scheduling these appointments separately, beginning with the sports physical. If any problems or concerns are detected during the physical, you and your child’s provider can examine them further during their upcoming wellness visit.
