Summer is everyone’s favorite time for self-care. We go on vacations, hit the gym, eat our fruits and veggies, get manis and pedis, use all the new skincare products, and soak in our bathtubs every chance we get. If a self-care expert tells us to try it, we do it all without hesitation…except for one thing.
When it comes to visiting our healthcare provider many of us look for any excuse not to go. For one reason or another, medical care isn’t a top priority for many people. Some even avoid seeking care when they are sick and attempt to “get over” their illness on their own.
We understand why scheduling a visit with your provider when you’re healthy isn’t always a top priority. But avoiding your provider when you are sick, even when it’s “just a cold” can lead to more serious illness and increases the chances of getting others sick if you are contagious.
Why People Avoid Their Providers When They are Sick
Patients avoid visiting their medical providers when they are sick for a number of reasons. They may feel they aren’t sick enough to need medical care and can treat most symptoms with over the counter medicines. Patients without insurance may worry about the cost of the visit. Others simply feel like a burden by seeking treatment.
All of these are understandable reasons for avoiding medical care…but that doesn’t mean it’s acceptable. Avoiding medical care when you are sick often results in you becoming sicker because you don’t have a proper diagnosis or treatment. You should always contact your provider even when you have something that typically can’t be cured with medication, like a stomach virus. Your provider can treat symptoms of the stomach virus like dehydration and vomiting with IV fluids and anti-nausea medicine. Avoiding treatment of these symptoms can lead to worsening of the symptoms and longer recovery time.
Why Visiting Your Provider is Self-Care
Sick visits aren’t the only time you should visit your provider. Annual wellness appointments are also essential to self-care. Wellness check-ups are a time for important screenings, a review of your health history, and a physical exam. They are also a time to have much-needed conversations with your provider about your overall health.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you don’t need a wellness visit because you feel fine and do all the right things like getting plenty of sleep and exercise and following a healthy diet. Even health and fitness gurus suffer from chronic illnesses and acute conditions like a stroke or heart attack. Annual wellness visits are essential for anyone who wants to stay healthy and live a long life.
