Just a few short weeks ago, providers and patients alike were hopeful that two medications already on the market would be the answers to treating COVID-19. These medications–hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine–are used to treat malaria and lupus. However, new information from three large studies of these drugs used to treat COVID-19 now contradicts initial findings.
In the largest study of possible treatments so far, UK doctors found that 25.7% of patients died within 28 days of receiving hydroxychloroquine for treatment. In comparison, 23.5% of patients died after receiving standard care for COVID-19. What’s more, a US study of using the drugs to prevent sickness in people exposed to the virus also failed to provide the results researchers hoped for.
Despite these new findings, some experts are not quite ready to give up on the drugs used to treat COVID-19. Other researchers believe continuing to test these drugs could hinder research into other possible treatments.
